What are you busy doing?
Yesterday was Indie Book Store Day and although I’m a Kindle reader, I’ve been craving paperback books recently. Maybe it’s being on the computer and my phone for so many hours of the day, when I want to enjoy reading, I don’t want to do it on another device.
So, yesterday, I ordered a bunch of books and look forward to receiving an email from The Strand notifying me that they’re ready to pick up later this week (I couldn’t get myself to pay the $9.93 for shipping).
The paperback book I am currently reading is the second edition of the anthology, Goodbye To All That, Writers on Loving and Leaving New York. The first edition that came out in 2013 was one of my favorites so I was thrilled to see a new version come out a few months ago with some outstanding writers. As a native New Yorker, there are many aspects of it that remind me why I love this city and why it drives me absolutely crazy.
In Ada Limon’s essay, “11 True Things,” she writes, “If I am busy working I do not have a panic attack.”
I immediately grabbed my pen and underlined this line.
As someone who has always made my career then business my #1 priority, it allows other things in my life to fall behind a bit. Sometimes I forget about the other things I aspire to be and do because I am so focused on my business. That doesn’t necessarily mean that all is good, and I’m perfectly content with all aspects of my life.
Today’s Prompt (9): What do you prioritize vs. want to prioritize in your life? Is your health your #1 focus? What do you want to spend more time being and doing?
Turn your phone on airplane mode and remove all distractions. Set a timer and write for 25 minutes. I encourage you to write in a notebook instead of on your computer or phone - don’t edit while you’re writing. When the timer goes off, if you have the time, space and interest to continue, go for it.
